Development Goals

Create a non-valved exhaust system that revolves around a single flow path, utilizing generously sized tubing to achieve remarkable increases in both power and sound. Elevate the level of aggressiveness while preserving a sound quality that remains within acceptable limits for street driving, thanks to the distinctive anti-drone features SOUL Performance is known for. Strike a balance between maintaining a smooth, refined tone characteristic of Porsche vehicles while ensuring maximum flow for optimal performance.

X-Pipe Design

The primary focus was enhancing exhaust flow by replacing the factory exhaust setup, which is limited to a 2.75-inch tubing diameter. SOUL Performance developed custom catalyst sections that allow for a full 3-inch diameter, leading into a unique 3-inch X-pipe assembly. Unlike designs that cut and weld 3-inch bends together or use cast X-pipes that reduce pipe diameter, SOUL’s X-pipe is cast to maintain strength and minimize welds, with an elongated X shape that preserves tubing diameter and maximizes flow.

Sound Tuning

Lengthening the flow path and merging exhaust flow in the X-pipe creates a smoother, higher-pitched exhaust note than shorter, separated bank designs. SOUL initially implemented four resonators similar to their 996/997/991 Turbo X-pipe systems, but found the 992 platform has notably less cabin intrusion, so they reduced the resonators to two, refining the note while allowing more overall volume. The 992 platform has a drone range of approximately 2,000-2,400 RPM, and Helmholtz anti-drone tubes were tuned in length and placement to reduce it to a reasonable level. The tubes are looped together into a symmetrical, aesthetically appealing design and capped internally to remain functional. The non-valved design also allowed precise positioning of Jet-Hot ceramic coated tip outlet backing plates to fill the bumper outlet holes and conceal the open area behind them.

Eliminating the Valves

Removing the valves posed a unique challenge, since the electronically actuated valves cannot simply be unplugged, and disconnecting the actuators from the mechanical valve bodies while leaving them plugged in causes limp mode. The factory valves are mounted to a bespoke bracket that creates a start/stop point for the electronic actuators, mimicking factory valve functionality. SOUL’s system includes these specialized brackets to guarantee no check engine light or limp mode.

Driving Impressions

Expect a bolder, fuller exhaust note with a smoother, higher-pitched tone. Drivers will notice more mechanical feedback and a ripping growl as RPMs climb, along with increased burbles during deceleration in Sport mode. The turbos make themselves known, with the Competition version delivering a particularly sinister character with added whistle and induction sound. This Sport Cat system delivers an enjoyable, refined, and distinctly Porsche exhaust note without rasp, and with reduced drone despite its free-flowing nature. Drivers will find themselves staying in gear through the rev range just to hear the car sing. That said, this system is aggressive; for a completely drone-free experience, SOUL’s Valved Exhaust System is recommended instead.

Construction

Every system is crafted in-house at SOUL’s USA facility from mandrel-bent, thick-wall T304L stainless steel. Back-purged TIG welding with ARCAL Prime argon gas ensures proper weld penetration and long-term durability. Water-jet-cut flanges are manufactured to ISO 9001:2015 standards with tolerances of +/- 0.003 inches. Thick-gauge aluminum fixtures act as heat sinks during welding to prevent warping of both the components and the fixtures.

HJS HD 200-Cell Catalysts

These catalysts represent the pinnacle of quality, renowned for exceptional flow and durability. They meet strict EURO 4 emission standards with remarkable efficiency while enabling an enhanced flow rate. The HD design incorporates premium triple foil winding for outstanding strength and resilience, and a brazing feature prevents core movement or damage under sustained high horsepower output.
